Fully automatic self correction system for the riser / pipe handling gantry crane on board the drill ship 'Deep Water Discovery' in Nigerian waters.

Following an incident with this crane the portside and starbosrd legs were allowed to run out of linearity until eventually a catastrophic failure caused serious damage to the super structure.

Banelec engineers were called to offer a solution when even the original crane manufacturers had failed to deliver.

We successfully installed emergency clamp brakes and encoders to monitor the position of the legs.

Our PLC system constantly monitors the position of each leg and if necessary will slightly decrease the speed of any leg in an advanced position depending on the direction of travel.

Eventually the legs are re-aligned without the operator realising that the self correction function has been applied. Once they are again in line the operation reverts to normal control.
